We don’t buy bikes just to stare at them from our living room, we want to hop on, enjoy the adventure, and get the heart racing. Whether you already have a bicycle or just purchased one, you should consider accessories to go with it. The proper accessories and gear will allow you to be safe, comfortable, and prepared. Walking into a bikes shop can seem a little intimidating at first when you’re not quite sure what you are looking for. Shops offer tons of accessories for all types of riders and commitment levels. Let’s break it down to the very basics to get you going:

Here are your 7 BASIC RIDING ESSENTIALS:

LOCK : If you will be leaving your bike for any reason, even to grab some coffee, you will want your bike to be locked. Bikes are valuable and bike theft rates have skyrocketed. Don’t take any chances. A U-lock is the safest. Its is more difficult to cut through than a cable lock and when attached properly, will deter most theft. If you are locking your bike for a long period of time, out of site, the U-lock is your best options. A cable is lighter and easier to carry, but also easier to cut through. If you’re enjoying a quick lunch with friends, the cable should do the trick. You can also combine both locks for extra security.

WATER BOTTLE & CAGE: Cycling without water is no fun at all. Water will keep you hydrated and prevent cramping. Most cages will fit any bike with water bottle mounts and cycling specific bottles will universally fit snug in the cage. Plastic bottles don’t fit right and often pop out.

REPAIR KIT: The most common problem cyclists face is a flat tire, and riders fear a flat tire so much, it prevents them from riding their bike. Don’t let your fear stop you from enjoying a ride. Get yourself a repair kit and keep it with you on your ride. Take a maintenance class, or watch online to learn how to change a flat. If you are stranded on the side of the road, you can even flag down a friendly cyclist to help. At least you’ll have everything you need:

  • SEAT BAG: To keep all your gear together. You can even include some spare cash for emergencies.
  • SPARE TUBE: Often times patching a tube is time consuming or just doesn’t work. Make sure to get the proper size to match your tires and wheel.blog-essentials-02
  • MULTI-TOOL: A multi-tool fitted with a selection of Allen keys, and sometimes a flat-bladed screwdriver will tighten most of the bolts on your bike. You will always want to make sure everything is tight, especially the seat post and handlebars.
  • TIRE LEVER: This is the secret to removing the tire from the wheel. We suggest carrying more than one, to make removing the tire easier, or for a backup if one happens to break.
  • PUMP: You won’t get too far without air in your tires. A hand pump that attaches to your frame or a Co2 canister and adaptor will get you moving again. If you are not comfortable with the Co2, we suggest a trusty frame pump.

MY SADDLE HURTS!

The question of almost every cyclist! A comfortable saddle can mean the difference between a wonderful day logging miles on your bike and a ride cut short due to saddle pain. Your saddle is one of the three major touch points on your bike, the other being your hands and feet. Your perfect saddle will depend on several factors including your riding style, hip width (bone structure), and flexibility. We’ll be answering some of the most common questions to help you find a solution for a more comfortable saddle.

WHAT IS THE BEST SADDLE?

There is no perfect answer to this question. While there are more quality saddles than others, there is not one saddle that works for everyone. Saddles are different for everyone. Just because your riding buddy loves his/her saddle, it doesn’t mean that is the perfect saddle for you. Some manufactures spend more time with research and development of their saddles, providing a better selection. For example, Specialized Bicycles saddles are designed, developed, and tested with leading medical and ergonomic experts to ensure a more comfortable ride, no matter the length of the ride, or the needs of the rider. They provide many options depending on your needs.

I JUST GOT BACK ON MY BIKE FROM SOME TIME OFF RIDING AND MY SADDLE HURTS, SHOULD I GET A NEW ONE?

Usually, no. Your sit bones need to adapt and this takes some time in the saddle. Sit bones are the parts of your body designed to bear your seated weight. Most cases of saddle-related discomfort arise because the load is carried on the soft tissues between the sit bones. A saddle is intended to carry some, but not all of your weight. The rest of your weight is mainly carried by your legs, and some by your hands and arms. If you don’t remember having pain when you stopped riding, chances are the saddle is fine, you may just need to build up a little tolerance. We suggest building up the miles slowly. If you’re still in pain after a few rides, you may need a new saddle.

saddleblog-05I THINK MY SADDLE IS TOO HARD, SHOULD I GET ONE WITH MORE CUSHION?

Usually, no. When a cyclist finds a saddle uncomfortable, the first impulse is often to look for a soft one. This is often a mistake. A saddle is designed to support and lift your sit bones while allowing your soft tissue and nerves to have a little freedom. This allows blood to flow during a long ride, reducing the chance for pain and numbness. Often time too much padding results in your sit bones sinking in to the saddle and putting pressure on the soft tissue, creating even more discomfort. Even if you have the correct saddle firmness, you will have to make sure other factors line up in order to feel any comfort. As long as the saddle is designed properly for your style of riding, is the proper width, and is set up correctly, give your hard saddle a shot.

IF I HAVE A GOOD SADDLE, DO I NEED TO WEAR BIKE SHORTS?

Yes! Bike shorts and saddles are designed to work together. Shorts provide a range of benefits from moisture wicking, reduce the chance for chaffing, and a good chamois will provide a layer of padding to the bone without restricting the soft tissue. Also, a little chamois cream will help with any chaffing.

WIDE OR NARROW?

The width of the saddle is critical to rider’s comfort and also complete depends on the rider’s bone structure (not the size of your butt). If the saddle is too narrow, the sit bones will hang over the sides, and the soft tissues will bear the load. If the saddle is too wide, it is likely to cause chafing of the inner thigh, and not support the sit bones properly.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY SADDLE IS IN THE CORRECT POSITION?

Saddle position may be adjusted in three different ways; height, angle, and front-back position. We highly suggest having a professional fit technician evaluate your saddle position since an improper adjustment can cause injury. Even if you have the correct height, your cleat or hand position can play another factor in your saddle discomfort. The three touch points (hands, saddle, and shoes) act as a system, so if one is off, it may affect the others. WHY DO SOME SADDLES HAVE A CUT OUT? IS THIS ONLY ON FEMALE SADDLES?

saddleblog-07No, while most female saddles feature a cut out down the center of the saddle, you will find many saddles to utilize this. The cut out allows saddle to provide comfort and support, increasing blood flow for men, and relieve soft tissue pressure for women.

IT’S TIME FOR A NEW SADDLE, WHAT DO I LOOK FOR?

Keep in mind the shape, width, padding level, cut outs, your fit, apparel, and chamois cream. All of these options will be determined by your bone structure, flexibility, and ride style. It’s also helpful to actually ride or demo the saddle to test the comfort. Beat the Indoor Training Blues

The rain is here and it’s time to dust off your indoor trainer. Although boring, indoor training has it’s benefits. When you are riding indoors, it’s easier to control important performance variables such as intensity of effort, cadence, gearing selection, heart rate and power-if you have a power meter. Plus, you will be safer from drivers on the wet roads.

There are dozens of training routines out there depending on your goals. Here are a few workouts to fit your training or riding style to get you going. In order to get the full benefit of the training workouts, at minimum we recommend having a computer that will display cadence or speed. Ideally, you will also be able to monitor heart rate and/or power.

How to find your 20 minute threshold heart rate and power thanks to TrainingPeaks:

  • Functional Threshold Power (FTP):
    • Your Functional Threshold Power is by definition the Normalized Power for an all out effort of 60 minutes.  However, you can get a fairly accurate estimate of your FTP by doing an all out effort of 20 minutes, then subtracting 5% from the average power value for that interval.
    • More information on Functional Threshold Power can be found here.
  • Heart Rate Threshold:
    • Your threshold heart rate will be the average heart rate from a recent intense race or very hard interval from a training ride, where you spent 45-60 minutes in duration at an all out effort.

THE PERFECT TRAINER SET UP:

  1. WATER: Expect to drink more than usual. Depending on the length and intensity of your ride, have plenty of water bottles and even nutrition/gels within reach.
  2. FANS: You will sweat like crazy! Fans (or an open window) will help cool you off as well as circulate the humid, stuffy indoor air.
  3. RUBBER MAT: Collect dripping sweat and keep your floors clean.
  4. TOWEL(S): Drape one over your bike to protect your frame from sweat and another to help wipe off excess sweat.
  5. FRONT WHEEL RISER: Anything from a phonebook, old college text books, or trainer specific rider to prop up the front wheel, leveling out the bike.
  6. ENTERTAINMENT: Help pass the time with a TV, music player, ipad…even a training buddy!

 

TYPES OF TRAINERS:

There are a couple of trainer options available, the most common are wind, magnetic, and fluid trainers.  With a wind trainer, your rear wheel hooks up to a roller and uses wind  to create resistance.  These tend to be more affordable options. The magnetic and fluid models work similarly to the wind option, but provide a much quieter ride. If you have a roommate or thin walls, everyone will appreciate these trainers, especially on an early morning training session. There are also Virtual reality trainers available that offer the rider a simulated workout. These workouts can be tailored to that particular athletes fitness goals and make for a more enjoyable setting than just watching the TV or listening to music. For those looking to improve bike handling skills, want a real road feel, or are simply just brave, will ride Rollers. Rollers allow you to work on your balance and will greatly improve your spinning technique, however, riding rollers take some skills. Layering 101: How to stay warm in cold weather.

THE SECRET TO STAYING WARM IN COLD WEATHER

As the temperature drops, there is no reason you have to stop riding or stick to indoor training. You can be perfectly comfortable and warm riding outside as long as you take the proper steps to stay warm. Here are some secrets to make those cold mornings bearable.

The secret: LAYERING. The idea with layering is to always provide the best interaction with your body regardless of your performance level. How cold it gets where you live will obviously influence how many layers and what type you need to wear. Layering for cycling means you can wear the clothing close to the skin, trapping heat before it dissipates. It also allows you to strip off as the day warms up, regulating your body temperature and comfort. There are three levels of layering to ensure you ultimate protection:

1 FIRST LAYER MOISTURE MANAGEMENTLAYERING101-02

You will often hear this referred to as a “base layer.” Most base layers are manufactured from a mix of polyester or nylon, and elastane materials, and even wool. The combination of fabrics and fabric treating technology is what gives the base layer its moisture wicking properties. Moisture wicking base layers work by drawing sweat away from the wearer’s body during exercise and allowing it to evaporate on the surface of the material, rather than sitting on the skin. The more dry you are, the warmer you will be. A good base layer will help regulate your body temperature during exercise. Keeping your core muscles warm is vitally important for maintaining performance and avoiding injury.

2 MID LAYER THERMO REGULATION

Your next layer is called the insulation layer and helps keep you warm from the cold while continuing to transfer moisture from the body. This mid-layer can vary in thickness depending on the temperature while riding. On a more mild morning, you may choose to wear your regular cycling jersey, however, if you are feeling very cold, you can choose a thinker fleece, or marino wool jersey with long sleeves. You may also find that during a ride you no longer need your third layer so having a mid layer you can wear on its own, such as a softshell that offers some protection from the elements, is a great idea.

3 OUTER LAYER WEATHER PROTECTION

The shell or outer layer protects you from wind, rain or snow. It is your first defense against the elements and the last barrier for escaping moisture the outer layer is arguably the most important and certainly the most technical. Shells work best in the layer system. Look for jackets that are waterproof, breathable and have taped seams and you’ll have a shell that you can wear for all weather riding. There are some amazing jackets available that are lightweight and packable while offering all the features you need to accommodate riding in a variety of conditions. Jackets that are virtually waterproof tend to have little breathability while lighter wind proof jackets might get wet quickly. Finding the right jacket for the temperature and weather conditions is very important to staying comfortable in tough wether conditions. Here are a few options:

Waterproof: Shells using laminated membranes such as Gore-Tex and eVent offer top performance; those using fabric coatings are a more economical alternative. These tend to be more expensive due to the technology and less breathable during heavier exercise. But during wet, cold mornings, keeping dry is key!

Water-resistant/breathable shells: These are best for light precipitation and high activity levels. Less expensive than waterproof/breathable shells, they’re usually made of tightly woven fabrics (such as mini-ripstop nylon) to block wind and light rain.

Soft shells: These emphasize breathability. Most feature stretch fabric or fabric panels for added comfort during aerobic activities. Many offer both shell and insulative properties, so they in effect combine 2 layers into 1. Soft shells include cold- and mild-weather options. These are perfect for cold, dry mornings.

WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF THE BODY?

After you master the layering to keep your core warm, make sure not to forget about keeping the rest of your body warm.

HEAD

For performance the best options are often thin thermal beanies or head bands and a neck warmer or balaclava. If warmth is your primary concern then you can add a helmet cover to keep the wind out. With helmets being built mainly for warmer weather and your head ditching a lot of your heat, making sure you have the right head coverage can make a big difference on how comfortable you are in winter temperatures.

HANDS

Winter cycling gloves will provide you with good grip, padded palms and reflective highlights to make sure you are warm, comfortable and safe. If you get cold easily you can find lobster style gloves that keep your index and middle fingers free to operate the controls while keeping your fingers extra warm. Stray away from mittens as they will restrict your mobility in a dangerous way.

LEGS

Exposing the knees, in particular, to very low temperatures is likely to be an uncomfortable experience, during the ride and afterwards. Covering the entire leg can be done either with a full-length tight with padding, or without padding to be worn over your favorite shorts or bibs. We also recommend using leg or knee warmers which are sleeves that cover the leg/knee and stop at the thigh under your shorts. These are great because they are easy to remove if the sun comes out.

ARMS

Often times your arms will be covered by your laying and jacket. There’s a time and a place for jackets, but more often than not, you’ll find that arm warmers will provide the perfect amount of insulating warmth for brisk fall and spring conditions. Plus, they’re easy to pack when you’re unsure of the weather, so there’s no reason to ever be chilly on a ride again.

FEET

Chances are, your cycling shoes are well ventilated to keep you feet cool and to maintain proper airflow. While this is perfect for the warm summer months, it’s less than idea for cold, windy, wet weather. Think of your feet the same way you layered your body. Start with a good moisture wicking sock (preferably wool for colder days), a mid layer which is your shoe, and then an outer shell to protect your feet from the wind or rain. You can choose toe covers which fit over you shoes and cover your toes and laces, or you can choose a bootie or shoe cover that covers the entire shoe and ankle. Various thickness and materials are available depending on the conditions.

 

As with all cycling garments, different ‘weights’ apply, and different fabrics will offer protection variously from the cold, wind, or rain. Thanks to different layers combined with modern fabric technology your body’s microclimate is always maintained at a comfortable level and the different layers interact with your natural thermo regulation at different activity levels in different weather conditions. Sneak Peak: SRAM Red Electronic eTap

Surf City Cyclery got the opportunity to have a first look and test out the brand new Sram Red Electronic ETap Wireless Shifting system. Here is what we thought:

SHIFTING

In a world of high-tech gadgets, Sram has gone against complexity to deliver the simplest shifting system we have seen. The concept is pretty straightforward; the right shifter shifts the rear derailleur into a smaller cog, the left shifts into a larger cog, push both together to shift the front from one position to the other. Similar to paddle shifting on an F1 race car. Sram has done away with doubletap and although it took a few shifts to remember the system, it becomes pretty intuitive. You won’t ever have to worry about hitting the wrong button. The shifters and brakes are easy to reach in any handlebar position. At first we felt the shifting was slightly slower than Di2, and you were able to feel the clicks which some of us preferred, however this differs depending on rider preference.

BATTERIES

Sram Red Etap is completely electronic meaning there are no wires, a battery is located on each derailleur, and the shifters are paired electronically with the derailleurs. Each derailleur has its own pairing button, which you press to put it into pairing mode. Then just press on one of the shifters, and the system will link this action with the relevant derailleur. The process is made even easier by the LED lights on each derailleur, which tell you whether the pairing has been successful or not.

Batteries are interchangeable and charge fully in only 45 mins to last about 60 hours. These batteries also feature an automatic sleep mode that sets itself to sleep when you’re not actively shifting and will wake up when a lever is pushed.

TIME TRIAL & TRIATHLON FRIENDLY:

Of course, Sram has considered the aerobar set up and we love the versatility in the options. Aside from the shifters positioned behind the brake levers, SRAM Red eTap will enable you to position up to four satellite shifters, called “Blips” anywhere on the bike. For time trial bikes, these Blips are connected by wires to a control unit called a Blipbox which then transmits the signal on wirelessly to the derailleurs. Again similar to Shimano Di2, the Blipbox is a junction box positioned somewhere on the frame. You can even use this Blipbox to customize your shifting on any handlebar setup, even drop bars.

SUMMARY

We were very impressed by the new Sram Red eTap. The system is easy to operate, the ergonomics feels good, visually it is clean and simple, and initial use works really well. Some of us prefer the feel of the click, and louder noise of the shifting compared to Di2. Check back, Surf City Cyclery will be one of the first shops to stock the new SRAM eTap early 2016.
